BlueStone has created a "Communications Applications Platform" (CAP) product that usually goes "in series" with any existing PBX. As connections to the PBX are via standard interfaces (usually PRI but it could be SIP) the approach is independent of PBX manufacturer.

The next step would be to replace the common equipment, but leave the current phones and their wiring in place. This brings, essentially, all of the benefits of moving to IP but with far less upheaval. Bluestone has developed the technologies that make working with your existing Avaya, Nortel, NEC etc phones as simple as working with new IP phones. Indeed with this approach as you grow your company you can can invest in new IP phones and have them work seamlessly alongside you legacy handsets.
